Renovating Open and Closed Staircases
We renovate both Open and Closed Staircases, and if desired, the matching Landings with Oak.
When renovating a Closed staircase, we cover the tread, the stair nosing (the front edge of the tread), the riser, and the bottom molding.
When renovating an Open staircase, we cover the tread, the stair nosing, the back molding, and the underside (oak veneer)—all finished in the same color.
An adjacent Landing can be covered with 12mm thick Oak parquet in the same color as the stairs, glued directly onto the wooden or concrete floor. Finishing the skirting boards on the landing is also one of the possibilities.
Additionally, an Oak landing tread (top step transition) is available for all our renovations. This is a separate Oak tread nosing at the top of the stairs, identical to the other nosings, ensuring a seamless transition between the staircase and the landing.
Materials of your Oak Staircase Renovation
Oak Overlays – 4mm Top Layer
For our staircase renovations, we work with top-quality oak overlays (1-bis grade). These treads contain virtually no knots, giving the staircase a calm and clean appearance instead of a busy look full of large knots, which is often perceived as distracting. Should you prefer a rustic look with more knots, that can also be arranged.
The oak overlays consist of a 4mm solid oak top layer glued onto a 12mm plywood base. Thanks to this combination, the steps are strong, wear-resistant, and low-maintenance. With normal use, these steps and top layers will last a lifetime.
18mm Thick Stair Nosings
Stair nosings are located at the front of the treads and finish the edge. Our overlays are supplied with robust solid oak nosings made of 18mm thick oak. The back moldings (for the rear edge of the steps on an open staircase) are made of the same oak wood, creating a beautiful, unified whole.
Rubber Anti-slip Strips in 5 Colors
Our treads are fitted as standard with a 10mm wide anti-slip strip running the entire length of the tread and are available in 5 different colors: black, anthracite, dark brown, reddish brown, or beige. The anti-slip strips are made of a soft, wear-resistant profiled rubber. This is important, because a beautiful staircase must also be a safe staircase. By adjusting the color of the strips, you can either accentuate them or make them less noticeable in the treads. If you absolutely do not want any anti-slip in the tread, this can also be arranged at an additional cost, as these overlay treads must be custom-made by our supplier.
Afwerking met Rubio Monocoat-kleurolie
For the finish of the stair overlays, we use Rubio Monocoat colored oil. This protects and colors the wood in a single treatment and lasts 5 to 10 years without annual maintenance. Thanks to the use of a colored oil, the wood grain remains visible, making every step unique. You can choose from over 40 colors, ranging from light oak to almost black.
During a no-obligation home visit, you can take your time to view the color chart to choose your ideal color. The color oil is applied to the materials by us well before installation, so that we can get to work at your location with ready-made steps.
Risers in HPL Laminate or Oak Veneer
Our risers are available in Black or White Laminate (RAL9010) or Oak Veneer. This allows you to create endless combinations for your staircase. Oak risers in the same color as the steps often provide a more classic look, while white or black risers offer a modern aesthetic.
Bottom Moldings in Oak, White, or Black
When renovating a closed staircase, we install bottom moldings under the steps. You can choose between Oak Veneer moldings in the color of the steps, or moldings matching the color of the white or black risers. Bottom moldings ensure that the underside of the steps (a narrow edge) is also neatly finished.
Gluing the Steps
We bond the overlays using high-quality staircase renovation adhesive that fills any gaps on the existing steps and prevents creaking. Generally, a staircase will creak less after a renovation with oak overlays because the total step becomes 16mm thicker, making it sturdier. However, we cannot guarantee that all "creaks" will completely disappear.
Stair Lighting and Safety
A closed staircase renovation with LED lighting is also an option. Available in warm white or cool white, supplied with a remote control, dimmer, and optionally with motion sensors. The stainless steel fixture, 1 cm wide and 30 cm long, is placed under the step behind the nosing. This not only adds atmosphere but also creates extra safety in combination with the anti-slip strips.
Solving Issues During Renovation
In principle, the current state of your stairs doesn't matter, as long as they are structurally sound. We do ask that you remove old glue residue, nails, and staples as much as possible to guarantee a good result. As they say: a painter prefers to start with a clean canvas.
We also advise you to complete any painting of the stringers (the wooden sides of the stairs) and the newel post (the central pivot point) before the renovation begins. Painting the stringers afterward is highly discouraged and nearly impossible, as the entire staircase would need to be masked off. At an additional cost, stringers can be covered with oak veneer and trim, though this is rare in practice due to the associated costs.
Creaking steps can often be addressed during renovation. If your current stairs creak, we can place extra screws through the tread into the riser to reduce or eliminate the noise.
Maintenance and Warranty
Ease of Maintenance: By using Rubio Monocoat oil, maintenance is kept to a minimum. Once applied, the color oil penetrates deep into the top layer, protecting the wood from external influences. This doesn't mean you can walk on the stairs with mud on your shoes! Also, avoid excessive water, as wood and water are not friends. Use the stairs normally, and you will enjoy them for years.
Manufacturer's Warranty: All materials come with a standard 2-year warranty under normal use.
Payment
Payment is made after the renovation is completed; this can be done via, for example, Tikkie, bank transfer, payment request, or exact cash. The invoice that has already been paid will be sent to you by email within a few days after installation for your records. We do not work with a deposit system and assume that customers pay immediately if they are satisfied
